There are several reasons why the numlock key may not come on in Windows 95. Go through the checklist below to fix this problem.

  1. This setting is configurable in your computer's BIOS. Make sure that you have this set correctly.
  2. Some keyboard drivers allow you to set this value. Check in the Control Panel under keyboard and see if you can set it there.
  3. Try adding a line to the config.sys file that reads "numlock=on"
  4. If you have tried all of the above and the numlock key still will not stay on when Windows loads, you will need to create a registry key that instructs Windows to turn this on for you. Create the following registry key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Microsoft Input Devices\Keyboard]

"Numlock"="ON"

If you are uncomfortable creating registry keys, you can download keyboard.reg. Merge it into your registry and it will automatically create the key listed above.
