Click Start, select Shutdown.  When the Shutdown Windows dialog appears, hold down the CTL-ALT-SHIFT keys and click Cancel.  This will end the explorer shell.  To restart the explorer shell, press CTL-ALT-DEL to launch Task Manager. In Task Manager select File, New Task (Run...).  Type in explorer.exe and click OK.
